Building Leadership

A successful project depends upon Leadership, Teamwork and Strategy in order to build quality faster than expected and simultaneously offer value engineering. This is how NHIC remains at the forefront of the construction industry.

We offer our staff a stimulating work structure in which they are motivated to achieve their maximum potential. Combining technical achievement, continuing education programmes, with innovation is why NHIC has attracted a uniquely qualified group of sophisticated professionals with international project experience.

With our team of seasoned professionals wielding the best-maintained plant and equipment in the region, we are able to deliver projects under difficult conditions and in the tightest possible timeframes. Our company leaders have over 120 years of combined industry experience, permitting complex risk and multi-task management with a no nonsense approach to deadlines. The organisational and management structure is founded upon the cornerstone of Director and Senior Management experience.

Emile Peter Elias is the founder and owner of Emile Elias and Company Limited and the Executive Chairman of the Emile Elias Group of Companies and has been a leader in Trinidad and Tobago construction industry since 1965, excelling and expanding in a very challenging economic environment in the 1980’s. The Trinidad and Tobago Contractors Association in November 2004 presented to Mr. Elias “with gratitude” its first Lifetime Achievement Award for his being “an advocate, instrumental and dedicated to the development of the local construction industry. Truly a builder’s corner stone.” Mr Elias is a founding member of the TTCA and JCC.

John Arthur Connon (Managing Director) was a Director of the Norwest Holst Group in the United Kingdom and spearheaded in 1990 the joint venture of Emile Elias and Company Limited and NH international Limited and management buyout of NH international Limited in 1992. John Connon has 37 years experience in managing major building and civil engineering contracts in the United Kingdom, parts of Europe and throughout the English-speaking Caribbean from the Bahamas in the North to Guyana in the South.

The other Directors of NHIC emanate from sound and successful backgrounds in Administration, Finance, Construction and Construction Management related activities.

Dianne Piper-Salandy (Director - Administration) has a wide experience in Trinidad and England in Human Resource Management and general Administration and Accounting and has negotiated union contracts on behalf of NHIC throughout the Caribbean.

Hugh Schamber (Director) is the managing director of Weathershield Systems Caribbean Limited and Trinidad Mastic Asphalt & Contracting Co. Ltd., two associate companies of NHIC. He is also a past president of TTCA.

Other Senior Managers of EE/NHIC have worked loyally with the Group for several decades, including the Senior Estimating Manager, Pooranlal Jairam.

NHIC boasts an extremely experienced Project Management Team with a mixture of Caribbean and other international experience. Austin McIlwaine, the Senior Construction Manager, has been working in Trinidad and Tobago on major projects for over 26 years and has successfully managed such projects as the Financial Complex, National Stadium, Trinidad and Tobago Unit Trust Corporate Headquarters and the Scarborough Deep Water Harbour in Tobago.

Information Technology Department

With its in-house IT Department, NHIC utilizes various types of integrated management information systems in Estimating, Accounting, Preventative Plant Maintenance and Construction Project Management and Planning. A secure electronic mail network utilizes high speed and broadband technology, so our staff can securely transmit and receive large drawings and attachments, communicating with Employers and their representatives anytime. In addition, all permanent staff have desktop computers and all managers are equipped with laptop computers with wireless internet ready technology. Each site also has high speed internet access, modern network equipment, wireless technology and web cam enabling video conferencing, as well as digital cameras and digital voice recording devices so that project developments and progress are systematically recorded.

Plant Department

NHIC’s equipment portfolio (fully company owned) boasts construction equipment for building and civil engineering projects that is continually maintained, updated and renewed. NHIC’s Plant Department accommodates over 20 monthly paid personnel where all mechanical and non-mechanical equipment is maintained. Planned Preventative Maintenance systems and Help Desk are continually being updated by its Commercial and Business Department.
